Full Moon in Scorpio: Revealing the Unconscious

Another Full Moon, another post witches! It’s time for the Full Flower Moon in Scorpio, which also happens to be a Blue Moon! I don’t know about y’all but I am feelin’ myself this full moon. Last year, full moons used to drag me down and make me feel so tired and withdrawn. This year I for sure feel at my most powerful and confident during the full moon and tired around the new moon. So strange!

Blue Moons

Let’s get back to that Blue Moon bit. When we had a Blue Moon last January, I went over the different qualifications of a Blue Moon (I reference this post quite a bit, but I also made it into a PDF for your grimoire or Book of Shadows, so check it out, it’s free!). This full moon is a Blue Moon because of this qualification:

Four Full Moons occurring between Equinoxes/Solstices.

The first Full Moon since the Vernal Equinox was on the Vernal Equinox which threw everything off. When there are four full moons between equinoxes, the third full moon of the season is the Blue Moon while the fourth full moon (which will be June 17th an just before the Summer Solstice) is called a “late moon.” So there you have it! In my personal opinion, I don’t think that blue moons carry any sort of special power, but to each their own. I believe that an extra moon just gives us more time to manifest and crush our goals for the cycle.

The Myth of Scorpio

The symbol of Scorpio used to confuse me so much! Shouldn’t a scorpion associate with Earth or perhaps Fire? But if you read the mythology behind Scorpio, it totally makes sense as to why this desert creature is associated with water. There are a few variations of the myth, but this one with the River Styx and River Eridanos:

In another Greek story involving Scorpio without Orion, Phaeton (the mortal male offspring of Helios) went to his father, who had earlier sworn by the River Styx to give Phaeton anything he should ask for. Phaeton wanted to drive his father’s Sun Chariot for a day. Although Helios tried to dissuade his son, Phaeton was adamant. However, when the day arrived, Phaeton panicked and lost control of the white horses that drew the chariot.

First, the Earth grew chill as Phaeton flew too high and encountered the celestial scorpion, its deadly sting raised to strike. Alarmed, he dipped the chariot too close, causing the vegetation to burn. By accident, Phaeton turned most of Africa into the desert and darkened the skin of the Ethiopian nation until it was black. Eventually, Zeus was forced to intervene by striking the runaway chariot and Phaeton with a lightning bolt to put an end to its rampage and Phaeton plunged into the River Eridanos.

When the moon is in Scorpio we will expect secrets to be revealed, our imaginations to run wild, and our passions to be amplified. This full moon would be a great time for some dream magick and divination as the unconscious and spirit world is going to be easily accessible. We should also look towards the planets that influence Scorpio to get a deeper look into how this passionate water sign is going to affect us. Since this is also a Blue Moon, give your ongoing abundance/love/money magick spells an extra boost and watch the results double.

Scorpio and Pluto

Currently, Pluto is in Capricorn AND retrograde until October 3rd. With Pluto doing double time in Capricorn, we can expect to be influenced on a subconscious level, as Pluto rules our subconscious. With Pluto being in Capricorn, we should watch out for old habits or desires trying to come to the surface. This isn’t all bad! Maybe you were super into a hobby but had to put it aside. Now’s the time to pick that back up! That gross nail biting or an overindulgence? Leave that where it belongs – in the past. As we discussed, Scorpio tends to amp up the passion and intensity in situations so if you do have bad habits that you’ve broken before, they might be that siren call that is hard to ignore.

Side note: Pluto retrogrades every year for half the year so it’s not as Earth-shattering like when Mercury retrogrades. The inner planets impact our day to day, whereas the outer planets affect longterm, big picture things.

Scorpio and Mars

What does Mars, the traditional ruler of fire planets have to do with watery Scorpio? Another fun fact about Scorpio: it was ruled by Mars in ancient times. Remember, the discovery of Pluto is fairly recent! This is also why I think I subconsciously associate Scorpio with fire.

Right now, firey and imposing Mars is in gentle and emotional Cancer which can be a bit of an issue (which is my natal Mars, yay.Trying to learn about and love my difficult placements.). Watch out for passive-aggression and try to not give in to the urge to tiptoe around any issues just to avoid conflict. To be clear, don’t go out picking fights and making a mountain out of a molehill, but perhaps address any issues with a sense of calm and reason. Emotions are going to run high and be confusing with Mars being in Cancer until July 1st when this planet moves to Leo. Take care of yourself and make sure you give a little compassion to those who need it. Put yourself in someone else’s shoes before passing judgment.

This moon will also be impacting your natal Mars sign by making your emotions, how you deal with conflict, and passion more intense. As mentioned my natal Mars is in Cancer, what sign is your Mars in?

Full Moon in Scorpio Correspondences

Let’s analyze each correspondence on how it relates to this full moon.

crystals & stones

Topaz – One of the birthstones of Scorpios that comes in a multitude of colors. This stone offers general strength and protection from the evil eye.
Labradorite – I recently read a description of Labradorite and how it contains every color of the human eye and that’s why it’s connected to our third eye. I thought that was so poetic. A great stone to keep with your divination tools or to help during your divination practices.
Fluorite – Used for invoking creativity and passion, this water-tied crystal would be best suited on a desk or workspace. I actually keep three of these crystals on my workspace!

Burgundy – This deep red invokes sophistication, ambition, and luxury.
Blush – Nonthreatening, this pale pink represents our softer, sensual side.
Brass – Similar to gold, this metal color is used for good fortune and abundance. Brass itself is also used for protection.

plants & herbs

Aloe – Commonly used for healing burns and soothing irritated skin, this succulent is used in general luck and protection spells.
Raspberry – Multiple uses including fertility, love spells, making your business prosper, and honoring the divine feminine.
Coriander – Useful in lust magick (looking at u Scorpio), this Mars ruled herb can also be used in place of a missing spell/ritual component.
Peony – It’s peony season! Use this flower and its root to bring in good fortune and protect against jinxes.

Mugwort – Long used for dream work and enhancing psychic abilities. Burning this herb is like using supercharged sage – the smoke will deep clean any space of psychic debris and negative energy.
Jasmine – A heady floral scent which I think it perfect for heady Scorpio. A delicate white flower that doesn’t seem potent but packs quite a punch.
Nutmeg – Enhances money or abundance magick!

Full Moon Bath: A Scorpio Bath Recipe

What better way to soak up the Full Moon in Scorpio than to take a luxurious bath. As Scorpio is a water sign but was also ruled by Mars, the ruler of fire signs, I think it’s appropriate to load the area around your bath with as many candles that will fit. Talk about ambiance!

Feel free to customize your ritual bath with any combination of correspondences that we explored above. You are certainly welcome to replace incense with candle scents. Burning incense in a small bathroom which produces quite a bit of smoke might be dangerous in certain situations.

When choosing crystals for your bath, make sure that your crystal of choice can get wet! Some are water-soluble and some become quite toxic when mixed with water.

My full moon bath is going to include:

A few drops of Jasmine essential oil
A lavender bath bomb
Labradorite and Fluorite
A nice glass of port

What are you using for your full moon bath tonight?
